Dr. Wouter Peeters
Wouter Peeters obtained his MA (2010) and PhD (2014) in Philosophy and Moral Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. In his PhD dissertation, he critically analyzed the challenges global environmental problems (climate change, in particular) pose to our conceptions of freedoms and responsibilities. More specifically, (1) he evaluated and extended the capabilities approach in order to give adequate consideration to the requirements of environmental sustainability; and (2) he critically assessed the motivational gap and the doubts about individual agency and responsibility in climate change. The former component resulted in a number of papers about the capabilities approach and environmental sustainability, and the latter has recently been published in the book Climate change and individual responsibility: Agency, moral disengagement and the motivational gap (with Andries De Smet, Lisa Diependaele and Sigrid Sterckx, 2015, Palgrave MacMillan).
Wouter’s current research focuses on the perspective of duty-bearers on their duties and responsibilities in tackling poverty and climate change. More broadly, his research interests include cosmopolitanism, sufficientarianism, human rights and correlative duties, the capabilities approach, climate ethics, environmental sustainability, and recognition theory.
